Java® Terminal Emulation
Web-to-host access in the industry's smallest Java applet.
Javelin is a Java applet that enables you to run host-based applications across
the Internet using a browser, such as Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Internet Explorer or
Mozilla, rather than a traditional terminal emulator.

or SSL Encrypted Javelin.
In order to give remote users access to your host applications, install Javelin on your web
server, and create a web page that includes a link to Javelin. When a user clicks on the Javelin
link (Java applet), the web server sends a copy of Javelin to his or her machine. Javelin
then runs automatically, connects to your host computer, starts the specified application, and displays the
application¹s screen.
Javelin is available in HP (700/92 compatible) and DEC (VT320 compatible) versions. It
is also available with or without SSL encryption.
When using encryption, Javelin connects to an encryption server program that Minisoft
provides, rather than directly to the host. The encryption server then makes a connection to the host,
and handles translation of the encrypted data.
Note: The web server, encryption server, and host application may run on the same
or a different machine. For example, your web server may be Apache running on your HP e3000,
which also runs your application. Alternatively, your web server might be Microsoft Internet
Information Server (IIS) running on a Windows NT server, while the application runs on an HP9000.
No local terminal emulation needed!
Javelin allows users to connect to HP e3000s, HP9000s, and other UNIX machines
over the Net without having to install a terminal emulator or ANY software locally.
Not using a local terminal emulator has several great advantages:
- Lower administration overhead. The MIS department does not have
to install updates on dozens or hundreds of PC's every time there is a software
upgrade. With Javelin only the web server needs to be updated.
- Because Javelin is a temporary download no local disk space is used.
This means more disk is available for other applications. In addition because Javelin is
not local it will operate on low cost diskless or "NC" Network Computers.
- Reliable access for even the most remote users. No more problems with
unreliable phone lines. Your most distant users can gain reliable access to corporate
information via the Internet.
